In the eve of the
inauguration as President of the Republic, Manfredo Teles is taken quickly to
the Hospital of Brasília, where he is operated in emergency.
There, it begins,
for his woman (Mariana), his family and the people who idolize him,
a death expectation that goes on to last 40 days and nights. The fight of the
President to survive is changed into martyrdom, in a true "Calvary", suffering
6 successive surgeries. This part of the story, based on recent and real
events, divided in 7 episodes of much emotion and drama, having portrayed the
suffering of the people and the disastrous consequences of what followed.
Manfredo Teles - an entire life fighting, always in the glow of
the political events that had shaken the nation in last the 50 years. Elected
President, defeats the dictatorship. He never makes the inauguration, with his
death finishing with the hopes of the people. To his side supersedes the calm
and the strong countenance of his wife, with great support in all the moments.
Mariana
Teles
- the wife of Manfredo projects herself as of an admirable woman, possessing
strength and intelligence that makes her idolized by all. She is the compass
of the family and the events gravitate around her as if she was a magnet
attracting them.
Parallel to
"Calvary", between an episode and another, the main plot develops,
with superiority for the human conflicts that involve the reliable man of the
President.
Maurício Gazarra - main character, with much personality, many
dreams and one complicated private life. Of humble origin, he has an infancy
of miseries and difficulties in ‘Recife’,
from where he leaves after the death of his mother. He faces all the obstacles to
change himself into “a somebody”. He travels for ‘São Paulo’,
where he grows and develops. There he is twice hit by luck, making a small
fortune. Thanks to this, he graduates in Sociology and delivers himself to the
task of helping the poor people at the
same time that he accumulates knowledge. He lives
deeply with the poor layers of the population making him idealize a project
"Project Free Port” - later approved by the President - it primarily aims
to save generations of convicted children from the misery, the hunger, the
illnesses, to the vices (dependencies), the marginality, the certain death.
Very young still, he married a girl of rare beauty, of ambitious character.
She becomes an object of luxury.
Tereza Muller Gazarra - Is the wife of Gazarra, from whom she lives
separated for 18 years. When arriving to
Brasilia, brings
him the return of the past, which he judged dead. More than that, it created
an explosive atmosphere, reaching for the true love of Gazarra, a young
reporter. Without scrupulous, she demands that she is accepted and that she
came back to occupy the place that rightfully belongs to her.
Sandra Meireles - a young reporter who Maurício loves. She
reached projection with spiced interviews made with personalities, published
in specialized magazines. She brings from childhood a trauma that pursues her:
The uncle raped her, at 9 years of age. The love of Maurício helps her to
overcome
this barrier. The romance between them is serious and adult like. Therefore,
when the disillusionment comes, it is moved away with the intention to end the
case.
Ana
Maria - Granddaughter of the President also possesses an iron will like
the grandmother. She is impressed with Maurício at first glance. She nears him
because of the ‘Free Port Project’. She’s young and determined, with advanced
ideas about who was born in a traditional ‘mineira’ family, where the women
are raised to occupy their place at the home. Her love does not find
correspondence, and that makes her suffer. She does not give up however to
reach her objectives, fighting openly for that she desires.
Adib Zariff - The corrupt senator has in Tereza, his lover
for the moment. Maneuvering in the shadows, joining the military faction who
conspires against the inauguration of Manfredo. His dream is to arrive to the
Presidency, whatever the cost. He attracts Sandra Meireles for his
journalistic project, placing her in reach of his Editor-Chief, a journalist
without morals.
Danilo Fortes - Contracted by the Senator, his objective is to
conquer Sandra, for whom he feels strong sexual attraction, and to overwhelm
the man he hates, that is, Maurício Gazarra. Their meeting brings tragic
consequences: when trying to abuse her sexually they engaged in a corporal
fight. The reporter wounds him fatally with a pair of scissors, at the
same time when
her mind recalls the scenes of the rape that she had recorded in her mind,
since infancy by iron and fire.
Jesuino Madeira - Dean of the journalists’ politicians of
Brasilia,
serious, honest and respected. A true friendship exists between him and
Sandra. He helps her in whatever he can. He commits a deceit, of serious
consequences: without knowing, he divulges a false statement of part of the
'Free Port Project’, causing a series of problems to the military and
political world.
Other characters
of great strength appear on the unveiling of the story. Some prominent
examples are:
Paulo Grabois - Is the blackmailer responsible for the
delivery of the false ‘PFP' to Jesuino Madeira. He becomes the main witness of
the murder of Danilo Fortes. He dissimulates to help Sandra, but blackmails
Gazarra. He ends up being assassinated by the military involved in the
conspiracy.
Jurandir Paixão - Sergeant of the Aeronautic, 'expert' in
electronics. Is a friend of Gazarra, to whom he aids to unmask Grabois. Is he
who confirms to Gazarra the movement to conspiracy. This gesture costs him his
life, eliminated without clemency by the conspirators.
Great part of the
story takes place in the political capital of the country - Brasília, one of the most
modern cities of the world. There are remarkable events in the great industrial
metropolis, that is
São Paulo and in the so called "Cidade
Maravilhosa",
Rio de Janeiro.
Some chapters are enacted in other cities.
We have, then,
the infancy of Maurício, taking place in the flooded zones of Recife, with all
its contents of miseries. We go, also to meet the "favelas", true
tenement houses where one does not believe that human beings can live.
Further, see the aspects of life in simple cities from the interior
(countryside). Also the problems of the Indians, victims of the white man,
with probable future consequences.
The gears start
in motion beginning with the election of Manfredo Teles. The work of the Press
begins to show, the climate of conspiracy of the un-acceptance of the military
with the loss of power, the game of the corrupt and opportunist
politicians, the fight of the people in search of a worthy standard of life is
transparent, the certain death of millions of children who would have been the
future of the nation. These are dramatic snapshots of the current Brazilian
reality.
The sentimental
drama that binds Mauricio-Tereza-Sandra-Ana Maria follows the unfolding of the
story from beginning to the end, through many instances.
In the end, the
conspiracy is aborted. The military conspirators are imprisoned. Senator
Zariff becomes the national joke when he is photographed with Tereza, both
half-naked, in a fire of the apartment in Ipanema, in a tragic-comic adventure
that the country watches, in delight, by television. Demoralized and as one of
the conspirators, he abandons the country, without date foreseen for his
return, protected by "Parliamentary Immunity".
The death of the
President reaches the climax. Ahead the great popular commotion, the body of
Teles is taken from
São Paulo
to Brasília, from there to
Belo Horizonte
to the colonial city of ‘Vila Real’, where he was born, to rest for the
eternity.
Having his plan
refused by the government, Gazarra takes its immense disillusionment to
Mariana. He realizes and acknowledges the failure of the mission and says
farewell to Ana Maria, taking off any hope of any union between them. He
departs to meet with Sandra, for their reconciliation.
One year and a
half
later, Maurício and Ana
Maria
(running for different states) are elected for the Constituent National
Assembly - that will write and approve the new Constitution of the country.
